William Sherman Dutterer (1943–2007) was a fearless innovator in American art, blending experimentation and introspection across five decades of creative practice. Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, his formative years in a blue-collar town influenced his artistic sensibility and thematic choices. After earning his BFA and MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Dutterer pursued a prolific career marked by boundary-pushing techniques and conceptual exploration.
From his early minimalist works influenced by the Washington Color Field painters to his later introspective series like Joe Diver, Dutterer’s art consistently explored the complexities of human existence. His alter ego, Joe Diver, embodies the artist’s quest to plumb the depths of creativity and meaning.
Dutterer’s works have been exhibited globally, including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, and the National Gallery of Art. They are held in prestigious collections like the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Katzen Arts Center. His legacy is one of relentless inquiry and a refusal to conform, leaving behind a body of work that challenges viewers to “see deeper” into both the external world and their inner selves.
Jamie Johnson, Head of the Dutterer Trust and Dutterer’s lifelong partner, is uniquely positioned to share an insider’s view of the artist’s life and work. With years of personal and professional collaboration with Dutterer, Johnson offers a deeply informed perspective on his creative processes, inspirations, and motivations.
As the custodian of his legacy, Johnson has worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Dutterer’s oeuvre, ensuring its resonance with both new and seasoned audiences. Her reflections in this series illuminate the technical and thematic brilliance of his work and the profound humanity behind it.
