LIWAYWAY: BALIK TANAW (The Dawn: Looking Back), is a cultural event showcasing art, music, and performances inspired by the Filipino people’s vision of a new tomorrow. LIWAYWAY is being held to commemorate Andres Bonifacio Day celebrated at the end of November in the Philippines. Bonifacio, considered a hero who led the Filipino people in rising up against Spanish colonizers at the turn of the 20th century, continues to inspire Filipino-Americans, Filipino immigrants, and many in the US and across the world to advocate for a society that actualizes the aspirations of the people.
The art pieces and performances part of LIWAYWAY reflects on 500 years of the Filipino people’s rich history of struggle, unity, solidarity, and finding identity with each other towards building a solid fortress out of the Philippines’ fragmented archipelago and global diaspora, divided by class, politics, geography, language, and culture. Through art, we articulate the world that we aspire for, a world that heals the trauma of forced migration, inequality, colonization, and imperialism that wears down on successive generations. Like Bonifacio and those who came before us, we will build a new world. This is our new dawn.
Please join us for a night of music, art, Filipino food from local restaurants and bakeries, and vendors selling a variety of Filipino crafts, zines, jewelry, and much more.
Organized by local community organizations Anakbayan North Jersey, GABRIELA NJ, Migrante NJ, and Malaya Movement NJ, with the support of Monira Foundation.
