Program:

The Monira Foundation’s Media Residency, in partnership the the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is a studio and equipment award offered to Chicago based recent grads of SAIC who explore moving image, time-based media, and emergent technologies. This residency offers studio space to 4-6 artists each year. Since 2018, the first year of this program, the residency has supported the next generation of new media artists and fostered innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship to recent graduates to build their practices outside of the comforts of institutional support. The Artists in Residence are surrounded by over 150 professional artist studios and situated within a thriving arts community in Chicago.

 

Community Give Back:

The selected artist will be asked to give back to the community through programming in support of the foundation. This can include film night, performances, talks, workshops or artist gatherings.

 

Program Overview and Facilities:

Through the Monira Foundation New Media Residency artists work in a collective studio space that is 20,000 sq/ft and engage with the public through self-generated and Foundation-organized programming. The Artists in Residence are surrounded by over 150 professional artist studios and situated within a thriving arts community in Chicago.

Selected Artists will have access foundation equipment as well as equipment through SAIC. The space comes equipped with tables as well as digital, av, and sound equipment. There is internet access and multiple electrical outlets. The studio is a communal space that residents are allowed to schedule for programming or project building.

In addition to much-needed physical space, awarded residents will receive visits from artists, curators, critics, and collectors at specific points during their residency. They will also be invited to participate in the artist community onsite through quarterly meetings and gatherings.
