Monira Special Projects Residency

Residences

Open Call begins March 14, 2025, and ends April 18, 2025

Program:

The Monira Foundation’s Special Projects Residency for 2025 will provide space and time to performing and movement-based artists in the New Jersey/New York area at the Monira Foundation Gallery. From June 1 – August 30, 2025, up to 3 selected artists or collaborative groups will each be granted month-long access to our gallery space to develop new work or continue work on existing projects. This opportunity allows artists to utilize the space to support their practices.

The Special Projects Residency offers a $500 stipend for the selected applicant or collective. Artists will also have access to a safe and private studio space with windows. The Monira Gallery measures 45 ft x 60 ft. A sound system is available, and selected artists may bring their music devices (with adaptors) to connect to the audio equipment.

In addition to providing physical space, residents will be featured on Monira’s social media and communication channels during their residency.

Eligibility:

Applications are open to individual artists or collaborations working in the performance, movement, and time-based realm, including disciplines such as dance, film, music, theater, and visual art related to movement. We welcome and encourage experimental practices that defy clear art world definitions. This residency emphasizes the artistic process without expecting to present a final piece of work, although artists may choose to do so if it aligns with their process. Housing and transportation are not included in this opportunity.

This opportunity is best suited for New Jersey/New York-based artists who:

  • Explore their interests and questions with thoughtful processes and articulate a context for their work.
  • Are excited about sharing their work through the Monira Foundation and embrace dialogue with audiences as a meaningful part of their process.
  • Are at least 18 years of age and not currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program and have not participated in a Monira Residency program in the past year.

Selected artists will have a strong portfolio of recent work. This award is not based on a project proposal but on existing work that is executed well. In other words, you do good work already—let us give you time and space.

This residency seeks to serve a wide and supportive community, supporting performers of all racial and cultural perspectives and abilities. The selection process involves a panel review with an invited curator, Monira staff, and former Resident Artists.

Apply:

Applications can be submitted through Slideroom (button below will be live on March 14th, 2025). To apply, you will need:

  • An artist or collaborative artist statement addressing motivation and direction of work (200 words max).
  • A CV listing recent accomplishments and highlights from the past 5-7 years (lead applicant only if applying as a collaborative).
  • 5 portfolio works, which may include videos or still images. Videos should not exceed 3 minutes, and still images cannot be composites. Each work should include a title, date, and description. Note any collaborators and their roles in the submitted work. The submitted work should be completed, not in process. Links or uploads of up to 5 MB are acceptable, and links must remain accessible through May 2025.

Monira staff may reach out for interview invitations before final selections are made. Please ensure your Slideroom account is up to date with the correct contact information, as we will primarily communicate through it during the review process.

Special Notes:

This program is an open call, with applications open from March 14 – April 18, 2025, at midnight EST. Applicants must pay a $15 application fee, with $5 covering Slideroom’s fee and $10 allocated to panelists for their time in review and program support. For those facing financial hardship, a waiver can be requested by emailing Anne Muntges at anne@monirafoundation.org. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by May 10, 2025.
