Please join us for the opening reception of Purvis Young, in conjunction with Mana Contemporary Chicago Spring Open Studios, Saturday April 26, 4-6PM:
Monira Foundation presents: PURVIS YOUNG, an exhibition of over 50 works of art and books (mid 80’s to early 90’s) by the self taught artist born Miami, FL 1943 – died Miami, FL 2010
Purvis Young, a voice from the 1980s, addresses contemporary issues through his paintings and assemblages of found materials. His work chronicled the struggles, sufferings, and angst of his black neighborhood in Overtown, Miami, and broader American society. He explored themes of drug addiction, poverty, and the devastating effects of war, particularly the Vietnam War. Young’s art also reflected the collective search for freedom and spiritual salvation by individuals and society.
Following the highly acclaimed exhibitions “Edges of Ailey” and “Shifting Landscapes” at The Whitney, which showcased ten of his paintings, Ysabel Pinyol Blasi, curator of the exhibit, delves into Purvis Young’s artistic journey and its relevance to our modern world.
The exhibition is made possible by a generous gift from The Sacks Family Collection to Monira Foundation and with the support of Mana Contemporary.
