Presented by Monira Foundation Croation Prayer (2013) is an intimate and beautiful altered book by Aileen Bassis, weaving together thread, transfer prints, lithography, and ink into a poetic visual meditation. Its stitched surfaces and layered imagery evoke acts of repair, devotion, and transformation. Language and material intertwine, reflecting Bassis’s dual practice as a visual artist and poet, where narrative emerges through texture, fragmentation, and accumulation.
Aileen Bassis is a New York City–born artist working across book arts, printmaking, installation, and mixed media. She is also a poet and author of “Among Sinners and Saints” and two chapbooks.Her work has been supported by residencies including Yaddo, the Fine Arts Work Center, and the Frans Masereel Center, among others, and by grants from NYSCA, the NJ State Council on the Arts, the Queens Council on the Arts, and the Puffin Foundation. Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in numerous special collections, including Yale University, MIT, RISD, and the New York Public Library.
