Join us for the opening of Mana Contemporary Chicago Highlight, featuring Dana Major and the work LightLab.
Dana Major presents LightLab, part of her Lumières light sculptures that re-articulate domestic glassware into mesmerizing glowing forms. Asserting intangible dimensions into the everyday, they bend the mundane and the sacred, inviting viewers to rediscover familiar objects through unfamiliar light fall.
LightLab transposes function as it transforms a domestic glassware vessel to a lens, investigating form, function, and perception. Composed of glass, steel, LEDs, and brass formed with cold and hot fabrication processes, and low-voltage circuitry, LightLab measures 16” x 9” x 25” and throws approximately 250 square feet of light. The work interacts with the space by casting light on the walls, ceiling, and floor, falling in unexpected places and bouncing from surface to surface.
Viewers can engage with LightLab through interruption and reflection, creating unexpected shadows and surprising compositions with their hands and bodies.
